Dear Toni,

Thank you for your letter. It was great to hear from you again. I’m so glad that you enjoy learning German.

You ask me what foreign languages students can study at school in Russia. Well, English, German, French and Spanish are taught in our schools. As for the popularity, certainly, English is the most popular language among students. Speaking about the reasons for learning languages, they are different. For some people it’s a job requirement, some people are fond of travelling and learning new languages.

By the way, you mention that your aunt is moving to Chicago. Is she going to work there? Why will you miss her? She used to give you good advice, didn’t she?

I think that’s all for now.

Keep in touch.

Best wishes,

Larisa

“Language shapes the way we think”, Benjamin Whorf suggests. While this view is wholeheartedly supported by some people who claim that our perception of the world is greatly influenced by the language, others insist that our mother tongue has nothing to do with it.

As far as I am concerned, I share the first viewpoint. To start with, from the cradle a baby learns about the world through the language his mother speaks. We accept without any doubt the allegation that tea is strong and rain is heavy. A further point to consider is that there are numerous words that are impossible to translate. That means that various ethnic groups are different in the way they perceive the surrounding world.

However, it might be argued that the unique language vision of life is unlikely to be considered anything but a nuisance. My opponents maintain that the world is a real thing that all humans despite their language can feel in the same way as all of us have the same sense organs.

Nevertheless, the argument of my opponents does not appear relevant and compelling enough.  It is worth remembering that the environment in different parts of the world is different. In some African languages they do not have the word “snow” while in Finnish they have a great variety of synonyms. Thus, we can assume that the Finns will be much more eloquent describing a winter day.

To conclude, I construe the idea of the unique language vision of life as a perfectly plausible one. Clearly, our perception of life is greatly determined by the language.
